Grammarly browser extensions, Grammarly’s add-in for Microsoft Word, Grammarly for iPad and iPhone, and Grammarly for Desktop all have free versions and all include Premium suggestions when you upgrade and sign in using your Grammarly account. Grammarly’s Business Plan is $15/month per member and the only option is to bill annually. This is the plan you’ll want to select if you want suggestions beyond the basic spelling and grammar corrections. There are also options to pay quarterly or monthly. Grammarly’s Premium Plan costs $12/month when billed annually, which is the best deal by far. In the free version, Grammarly will sometimes tell you that a sentence could be re-worded for clarity and things like that and let you know that you can upgrade to Premium in order to get those insights, but I personally have never found it obstructive or annoying. Grammarly has a free version that is truly free-no time limit or ads. It’s also worth noting that Grammarly does require an internet connection in order to make suggestions, so if you often write will disconnected from the internet, this may not be a good option for you.

Note that Grammarly is automated, so it’ll ensure that your emails sound professional and are free of most errors and is great for a first and second pass on your writing, but it’s ultimately not going to replace a human editor who is better equipped to edit for nuance, meaning, genre, etc. The Business plan is also a fantastic option for small businesses (even single operators!) for help with brand voice (plus tools for working with a team). If English is not your first language, Premium is also really helpful for helping your writing in English sound more natural. If you want more advanced features, you can upgrade to premium and get full-sentence re-writes, help with word choice, suggestions for tone clarity and consistency, plagiarism detection, and more. The free Grammarly plan checks for grammar, spelling, punctuation, conciseness, and will identify the overall tone of your writing. It also happens to be completely free, with the option to pay for additional features. Many creative writers also choose to use this tool because of how easy it is to use and how well it’s been integrated into just about every place you’d choose to write from Word to web browsers.
This makes it a great tool for general use and is especially helpful if you use Scrivener to write essays, draft blog posts, and other types of similar writing. It’s geared more toward academic and professional writing but is also a fantastic general spelling and grammar checker for all types of writing.

Grammarly was the first third-party editing tool to integrate nicely with Scrivener ProWritingAid has since launched a Windows version that works well with Scrivener (more on that here), though the Mac version is still forthcoming. Both are fantastic tools, and both can be used with Scrivener. However, some writers may want more advanced automated proofreading than Scrivener has to offer, and to get that, you’ll need to use a third-party tool like Grammarly or ProWritingAid. Like pretty much all writing programs on the market, Scrivener comes with a spellcheck tool.
